Antique Emerald Rings
Emerald is a gemstone which originates from the mineral beryl and obtains its rich, distinctive green colour from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium in the mineral composition. The word ‘Emerald’ originates from the Greek ‘smaragdos’, meaning ‘green gem’, evolving via the Latin ‘smaragdus’, Old French ‘esmeraude’, and Middle English ‘emeraude’.
We grade emeralds in the same way that we grade diamonds and most coloured gemstones. The four Cs: colour, cut, clarity, and carat weight are all used to determine the quality and value of the emerald. The finest, most valuable emeralds possess a verdant green hue and a high degree of transparency.
Colour is all-important to emerald, inclusions are secondary and a natural phenomenon.
Where are Emeralds found?
Emeralds are found in granite, pegmatite, schist, and alluvial deposits, with the finest gems being found in Columbia. Emerald deposits are also found in Austria, India, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Egypt, USA, Norway, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe.
